Prospect at a glance
- City limits vs. ZIP code. The "Prospect, KY 40059" mailing address covers an area much larger than the city, reaching out to areas such as Norton Commons. A Prospect address doesn't mean a home is inside the city, so check the exact address.
- Two counties. Most of Prospect is in Jefferson County, and a small part is in Oldham County. The county affects taxes and schools.
- Character. Large-scale, high-end subdivisions began in the area in the mid-1960s. The 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts about 2,088 housing units, and about 93% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.¹
- Neighbors. Anchorage and Louisville's East End are close by. See our Anchorage and Louisville pages.
- City services. City Hall is at 9200 US Highway 42, (502) 228-1121.
Parks, trails and getting around
The city runs four parks. Harrods Creek Park covers 109 acres with about 4 miles of trails and a canoe and kayak launch. Putney Pond and Woodlands covers 26 acres. Little Hunting Creek Park has the John E. Evans Pavilion, which has hosted free city concerts, and Cowley Park has a gazebo. Nevel Meade, a public golf course, is in the Oldham County part of Prospect.
US 42 is the main road through Prospect, and the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265) has a partial interchange with US 42 at Prospect. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey estimates the mean commute for Prospect workers at 22.4 minutes (±0.8).¹ Drive your own route at rush hour before you make an offer.
Schools
Because Prospect is in two counties, public school districts depend on the address. Homes in the Jefferson County part are served by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). Homes in the Oldham County part are served by Oldham County Schools. Confirm the district and school assignment for the exact address with the district before you make an offer.
Prices: what we can and can't tell you here
The Census Bureau's survey estimate of the median value of owner-occupied homes in Prospect is $538,400 (±$56,822) (ACS 2020–2024).¹ That's what owners said their homes were worth, averaged over five years. For a city this size the margin of error is wide, and it isn't today's sale price. The market trends panel at the bottom of this page pulls current figures, and we'll send you a comparison of recent nearby sales for any home you're considering.
Buying in Prospect: questions to ask
- Is the home inside the Prospect city limits, or just in the 40059 ZIP code? That affects city services and taxes.
- Is the home in Jefferson County or Oldham County? That decides the school district and the county tax bill.
- What are the property taxes? Ask for the total tax bill on the specific home.
- An EF2 tornado struck Prospect on April 2, 2024. Ask the seller about any storm damage and repairs, and get a full home inspection.
- Are you pre-approved? Talk to our preferred lender, Andy Shelby of Go Rascal, before you start touring homes.
