Louisville
Louisville is Kentucky's largest city, and "Louisville" covers a lot of ground. Since 2003, Louisville and Jefferson County have been one consolidated government, Louisville Metro. Dozens of small cities inside the county kept their own city governments, including Jeffersontown, Middletown, St. Matthews, Prospect and Anchorage. So two homes a mile apart can have different city services, taxes and rules. This page has the latest Louisville homes for sale and a plain-English guide to the areas we work in every day.

Louisville areas and ZIP codes
ZIP codes don't follow neighborhood or city lines exactly, so use them as a starting point and check the exact address.
East End and the eastern suburbs. These include Middletown, Anchorage, Lyndon, Springhurst, Hurstbourne and Jeffersontown. Common ZIPs are 40222, 40223, 40241, 40242, 40243, 40245 and 40299. You'll find established subdivisions, newer construction farther out, and quick access to I-64, I-71 and the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265). See our Jeffersontown and Middletown pages.
St. Matthews and nearby. ZIP 40207 includes St. Matthews and Indian Hills, with older homes close to shopping and the Watterson Expressway (I-264). See St. Matthews.
The Highlands, Crescent Hill and Clifton. ZIPs 40204, 40205 and 40206 are older neighborhoods with early-1900s homes, walkable streets and the Olmsted parks nearby.
Prospect and the northeast. ZIP 40059 runs along the Ohio River side of the county, toward Oldham County. See Prospect.
South and southeast Louisville. Fern Creek, Okolona and the areas off the Gene Snyder Freeway offer a wide range of home styles and lot sizes.
Getting around
Louisville sits where I-64, I-65 and I-71 meet, with the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265) as the inner and outer loops. The U.S. Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey puts the mean commute for Jefferson County workers at 22.2 minutes.¹ Your commute depends on the exact address and time of day, so drive the route at rush hour before you make an offer. Across the Ohio River are Clark and Floyd Counties in Indiana, and many households cross the bridges every day.
Schools
Most public schools in Jefferson County are run by Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). The Anchorage Independent School District serves Anchorage. School assignment depends on the address and can change, so confirm it with the district before you make an offer. Don't rely on a listing description.
Prices: what we can and can't tell you here
The Census Bureau's survey estimate of the median value of owner-occupied homes in Jefferson County is $248,400 (ACS 2020–2024).¹ That's what owners said their homes were worth, averaged over five years. It's not today's sale price. The market trends panel at the bottom of this page pulls current figures for Louisville, and we'll send you a comparison of recent nearby sales for any home you're considering.
